Through an interactive bush walk learners were able to taste native plants, explore different hut structures and participate in some traditional dancing. This culminated in a wonderful Welcome to Country ceremony where learners were invited to be painted with Ochre, received a water blessing and a smoking ceremony. This linked strongly to our Inquiry unit, “How can we create and take care of special places?”.
Our learners were excited to share:
My favourite part was being able to see the fire and the huts. The fire made the smoke and the smoke brings the leaves smell to you. And that’s how they welcomed us. - Sosha (1A)
I liked when we got to wash our bodies in smoke and scream out Bunjil. The smoke helped us appreciate our land. - April (1A)
I liked eating the leaves. They tasted salty. You use it for when you have a tummy ache. - Oscar (1E)
Their homes looked like caves. They are made with sticks and bark and bones. - Ethan (1E)
The story about the creation of their special place. I learned about the map to Australia and the different groups and languages of the Aboriginals. - Aaryan (1E)
