GWPS – Extra Curriculum Program Guidelines
Advanced Mathematics Class
The Advanced Mathematics Class targets high achieving students in all areas of Mathematics. It aims to support student learning and target Maths competitions such as the Maths Olympiad Competition and the Australian Mathematics Competition. It provides an opportunity for students to discover and consolidate talent in mathematics; to further challenge and extend the skills of problem solving, logical and critical thinking in a small group setting. It is designed for students that are at least 12 months above the standard expected in all areas of the Maths Curriculum at their current Year Level.
The Advanced Mathematics Class is offered to selected Years 2 to 6 students.
Currently there is no cost to participate the program. However, an individual registration fee calculated per student may be necessary when selected groups of students are participating in external maths competitions such as the Maths Olympiad.
This program is only available to Years 2 - 6 students. Students who are interested in participating in the Advanced Mathematics Class must submit an expression of interest at the beginning of the semester. These students then sit a test that has been designed to establish student skills in problem solving and curriculum targeting AusVELS assessment criteria that are above the expected standard. The top students are then offered a place in the program.
Our priority is to give as many students access to this program as possible, so students may only participate in one Semester per year. Students are divided into 5 groups of around 8 children in each group, meeting with Mrs Lowe or Ms Cath Peters once a week.
