As a means of further developing the Extra-Curriculum opportunities for our students, we have implemented a Coding program. This program is only open to students in years 3, 4 5 and 6.
Coding has been highlighted as a 21st Century skill with tangible benefits for students, it has been included in the draft of the Victorian Curriculum for senior students, and was highlighted in 2015 and 2016 with the worldwide initiative “Hour of Code,” in which Glen Waverley Primary School participated. While the use of technology is a great way to support our students’ learning, so too is coding which allows them to understand the logic and science that controls this technology.
Kids Unlimited is the company who will run the coding program for our school. The students will participate in a one hour coaching session each Wednesday, during the luncheon recess or after school. Using a design-based learning approach, students explore computing, programming logic and design concepts through hands-on exercises using the proven platform Scratch.
