At Glen Waverley Primary School we are very fortunate to run Music Innovation. This is an additional program that runs alongside classroom music. Each term Music Innovation is offered to a different year level and the class runs once a week.
Music Innovation is an opportunity for students to engage in composition, arrangement and ensemble playing at a deeper level then what is offered in the Classroom Music Program. The program is generally offered to students who have a musical background and learn an instrument or undertake singing lessons.
Previous units have seen Prep students engage in a ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ unit. Prep students learn about part work, melody and playing to beat through singing and xylophone using the song ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.
In Year 1 and 2, students explore how emotion, melody and form are used in composition by learning and composing songs on xylophone, keyboard and GarageBand.
In Year 3 and 4, students develop their ensemble and arrangement skills by creating a class band, or small ensembles, to learn World Music.
Finally, Year 5 & 6 students focus on composition and arrangement by either composing a short movie soundtrack or creating and leading their own small ensembles.
