On Monday 10th August, our Prep students and teachers, had a wonderful time watching and participating in The Flying Bookworm interactive storytelling incursion. Prep students were transported into the exciting worlds of some loved traditional stories.

The children enthusiastically joined in with The Little Red Hen, The Little Engine That Could and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The stories were brought to life through actions, movement, imagination and plenty of laughter.

In ‘The Little Red Hen’, students helped bring the story to life as the Little Red Hen worked hard to plant, harvest and make bread, all without much help from the other animals. The students joined in with actions such as grinding, mixing and kneading the bread, and even helped decide what ingredients could go into the mixture. They particularly enjoyed pretending to smell the freshly baked bread.

Our second story,’ The Little Engine That Could’, had everyone joining in with train actions and enthusiastic “Toot Toot” sounds. The students followed the Little Blue Engine as it helped the other engines make their way up the steep mountain. This story provided a wonderful opportunity to explore the important message of perseverance, kindness and helping others.

The final story, ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, had the children stomping their feet and joining in with the familiar “Trip, trap, trip, trap” as the goats crossed the bridge. Some students were chosen to be actors on the stage, when they used their imaginations to become the different characters and enjoyed helping to scare away the troll.

Throughout the incursion, our Foundation students were encouraged to use their voices, actions, facial expressions and imaginations to participate in the stories. This linked in with our Term Three inquiry BIG question, ‘How do we create and share our stories?’ They discovered that storytelling can be brought to life with just a picture storybook, some friends, a simple costume and an imagination.

It was wonderful to see the students laughing, joining in, responding to questions and confidently becoming part of each story. What a fabulous way to develop a love of stories, language, imagination and creativity.
