Reflection Sheets: Supporting Positive Change Through Reflection
As part of our “Making Better Choices” approach, we’ve introduced a Reflection Sheet designed to provide students with a supportive and structured way to think about their behaviour. This process is especially valuable for students who may struggle with repeated poor choices. The reflection sheet serves as a familiar, predictable tool that guides students through the steps of understanding their behaviour, recognizing its impact, and considering better choices for the future.
Here’s how it works and why we believe it’s so effective:
Structured Reflection for Insightful Growth
The reflection sheet asks students to consider a few key questions: What happened? How were you feeling? Who did you affect, and how? By answering these questions, students are encouraged to step back and think about their choices from multiple perspectives. This structured reflection process helps students connect their actions to their emotions and understand how their behaviour impacts others, fostering empathy and self-awareness.
Learning to Make Positive Choices
With prompts like, What could make things better? and What are your next steps? the sheet encourages students to think about constructive actions they can take in the future. This isn’t just about correcting behaviour in the moment—it’s about equipping students with tools they can use to make better choices independently. They learn that they have the power to positively shape their own experiences and those of others.
A Collaborative Home-School Approach
We invite parents to be a part of this reflection journey. Each completed reflection sheet includes a space for both teacher and parent signatures, underscoring the partnership we value with families. When these sheets come home, they offer an opportunity for you to discuss the experience with your child, support them in setting positive intentions, and celebrate their growth.
Positive Outcomes for Students
Through this reflection process, students gain several important skills. They develop the ability to think critically about their behaviour, take responsibility for their actions, and envision more constructive paths forward. Over time, these skills help build resilience, empathy, and a sense of accountability. The Reflection Sheet is a tool that empowers our students not just to manage their behaviour but to truly learn from it, growing into mindful, respectful individuals who feel confident in their ability to make positive choices.
Thank you for supporting your child’s growth and for being an integral part of this positive change. Together, we’re helping our students build the skills that will enable them to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.
