Year 3 Immigration Museum Excursion
On 7th and 8th September, Year Three students visited the Immigration Museum as part of their Term Three Inquiry unit, “How does our country continue to change?”
During the excursion, students participated in an interactive education workshop where they explored representations of artefacts from the museum’s collection. Working in small groups, they used these objects as clues to investigate the experiences, stories and perspectives of different people and communities. Students looked closely at representations of a possum skin, a Hmong immigration story cloth and a hand-carved wooden panel. They shared their observations, discussed their ideas and worked together to interpret what these artefacts could tell us about people’s lives, experiences and connections to Australia.
Students also explored the museum’s exhibitions, including Leaving Home, Voices Across Time and Getting In. Through these experiences, they discovered stories of immigration and explored Australian history from a range of perspectives and across different time periods.
Dhanisha: At the museum, I thought we would learn about immigration. And we did! Immigration is when you move to another country. People move to another country for many reasons such as education and natural disasters.
Suhansa: I enjoyed the interview room where we got to learn about how people were accepted into Australia and listening to the questions they asked.
Bella: I enjoyed learning those toys that people played with in the past. It was very interesting to see what they looked like and what they played with compared to what we play with now.
Dinara: I really enjoyed learning about how the Aboriginal people made clothing as well as learning about all the different types of people who have migrated to Australia.
Viduka: The museum was enjoyable because it had a lot of interesting artefacts and it related to what we were learning in inquiry at school.
3E: There were different hands-on experiences like touching the possum skin and a quilt. We explored reasons why people came to Australia. I liked looking through the portals to find old fashioned things.
It was a fantastic day of exploring, discovering, teamwork and plenty of “Wow, I didn’t know that!” moments!
