On Monday 31st March, the level 3 cohort had the privilege of welcoming Taylor from Monash City Council as a guest speaker. Taylor shared valuable insights about the roles and responsibilities of the council and how their work shapes the community we live in.
The Role of the Council
Taylor explained that Monash City Council is responsible for making and enforcing local laws and maintaining facilities to keep the community safe and running smoothly. From looking after roads and parks to managing waste collection and community services, the council plays an essential role in ensuring a high quality of life for residents.
Our students were surprised to learn some key facts:
Thinuli: “There are about 200,000 people living in Monash City Council.”
Saneli: “We can only vote when we are 18.”
Shenelle: “Approximately 50% of residents in Monash City Council were born overseas.”
Owen: “Everyone has rights and responsibilities, for example one responsibility is to keep our world clean and one right is every child should have access to education.
Services for the Community
Beyond laws and governance, Taylor highlighted the many services provided by the council, including:
Libraries and community centres – Offering free resources, workshops, and events for all ages.
Environmental initiatives – Programs that support sustainability, including tree planting and waste reduction.
Support services – Assistance for families, seniors, and new residents to help them feel at home in Monash.
Through cooperation and active participation, we can all contribute to making Monash a more resilient and inclusive place to live. A big thank you to Taylor for inspiring us to think about the role we each play in shaping our community!
